Ingredients for Aromatic healthy tomato soup
- 1/2 cup Split toor dal (yellow lentil–pigeon pea)
- 1 tbsp Coconut oil
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 1 tsp Fennel seeds
- 2 tbsp dried neem flowers (optional)
- 3 Chili, dry red hot
- 1 tbsp Crushed ginger
- pinch solid asafoetida
- 1/4 cup curry leaves
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 3 cup cherry Tomatoes or chopped tomato
- 1 Whole black garlic
- 2 tbsp Rasa powder
- 1/4 cup Coriander leaves, finely chopped

Prepare a checklist. Keep essential items close by. You can buy the rasa powder from Indian grocery store. However I made it myself with a blend of roasted spices -cumin, coriander, black pepper, red chilies. and toor dal, chana dal. urud dal etc. my recipe is available in cookpad
Soak asafetida in 1/4c boiling water in a bowl. it would dissolve easily
Cook toor dal in a bowl with 4 cups of water in a pressure cooker. While dal is cooking, attend to the rest of chores. Follow the instructions for using pressure cooker. When dal is cooked turn off the heat. after the pressure goes down take it out of the cooker
Add mustard seeds to hot oil in a heavy saucepan over medium flame. After mustard seeds splutter stir in neem flowers, cumin seeds, red chilies, turmeric powder
Add tomatoes, ginger and garlic to a blender jar with 2c of water, blend to make tomato puree. Add the tomato puree to the saucepan with tempered spices. cook over medium flame until the raw smell goes way. Add the cooked dal with water. Add 6 cups of water and bring to a boil. Bring it to boil on high flame for 10 minutes. Mix 2 tablespoons of rasa powder in 1 cup of hot water, add it to the soup and mix well
Over medium flame Continue cooking for 4-5 minutes, add salt, dissolved asafetida and mix. Turn off the stove. Add cilantro. The whole house will be filled aroma. Transfer it to a serving bowl. You may fill up a cup with nutritious aromatic flavorful tomato soup, the south Indian rasam and drink it. Or mix with rice and eat.
